Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing modalities known to humankind. It is an alternative medicine methodology originating in ancient China over five thousand years ago that treats patients by manipulating thin, solid needles that have been inserted into acupuncture points in the skin.

According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as Qi - moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin.

The flow of Qi can be disturbed by many factors: physical, mental and emotional. According to Chinese medicine theory, anxiety, stess, anger, fear, grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma can all lead to disruption of the harmonious flow of energy within the body. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and help to restore its natural balance.

Acupuncture's use for certain conditions has been endorsed by the United States National Institute of Health, the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, the World Health Organization, and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine

The World Health Organization's review and analysis of reports on controlled acupuncture clinical trials can be viewed by following the link in orange below:

Although sometimes described merely as a means of pain relief, traditional acupuncture is actually used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall wellbeing of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms.

A national research project surveying patients about their acupuncture experience found the following:
